The Proposal

Dave knew he wanted to propose to Allison for quite some time, but it wasn’t until the fall of 2012 that the pieces finally fell into place.

First, he sought Steve’s (Allison’s Dad) permission during a weekend in Minnesota that October.  Next, he told his parents the plan during a trip to Oregon in November, where he also picked up the ring he had been (desperately) trying to keep a secret.

After returning to the East Coast, he hid the ring in his drawer of random stuff for nearly a month.

Finally, December 21 came around and Dave knew that was the night to make things happen.

Allison and Dave decided they’d officially become a couple right around this time in 2009 after walking around the national Christmas tree exhibition on the White House South Lawn.

Hoping to be romantic, Dave led Allison towards the tree exhibition on the 21st, refusing to hug her the whole time because he didn’t want her to feel the ring box.

In true Washington DC fashion, the exhibition was closed because President Obama’s helicopter, Marine 1, was preparing to land and take the first family away for the holidays.

Forced to improvise, Dave was sweating profusely and so nervous he couldn’t speak as he led Allison on a walk to other parts of the South Lawn.

There, he dropped to one knee and popped the question.  Thankfully, she said yes:
